  2. Any business including hospitals must account for its resources, time and money to ensure efficient operations, best results and longevity. • This accounting requires data collection, data representation (graphs), and data analysis.

  3. During this lesson, you will be collecting data, creating graphs, will use ratios and proportions to convert data. • Lets brains storm the responsibilities of a N.A and an R.N.

  4. Bed making-200 min. • Meal Preparation-100 min. • Personal care-180 min. • How could you display this information on a report? • Tables, lists, graphs, etc. Which would be the best for the above information? • Answer: Pie graph, they are great for showing data that reveals parts of a whole.

Bed making-200 min.Meal Preparation-100 min.Personal care-180 min. • Lets make a pie graph. • Step 1: Figure total time • Step 2: Convert each time into decimals (round answer to two decimal places) Ex: 200/480 = • Answer: 0.42 Step 3: Convert decimals into degrees. Hint how many degrees in a circle? 0.42 x 360º = • Answer: 150º

  6. Step 4: Display your information on a pie graph using the protractor and color pencils. Note: Be sure to include a key.

  7. Ratio & Proportions • Converting time to number of tasks Example: 3 N.A.s can make 35 beds in an 8 hr. shift. How many beds can 4 N.A.s make in 8 hr. shift ? Formula: Known Unknown 35 beds = (X) beds 3 N.A. 4 N.A.

  8. Formula: Known Unknown 35 beds = (X) beds 3 N.A. 4 N.A. • Cross-multiply the above 35 = X 3 4 3X=140 3 3 X=46.6 round to 46 because you don’t make only .6 of a bed.

  9. Another way to solve the same problem is by using means and extremes. • Work problem on board demonstrating mean and extreme. • 35 : 3 = x : 4

  10. Try this on your own • How many mg. of medication would you give an 80 lb person if you should give 20 mg. for every 10 lbs. ? Do Problem. • Known Unknown 20 mg = x mg 10 lbs 80 lbs • 20 : 10 = x : 80

  11. Another example: • How many milligrams of ampicillin is given to a 250 lb person if you should give 125 mg per 100 lbs. ? Do Problem • 125 : 100 = x : 250 • Now we are ready to tackle a real health occupation problem using data collection, creation of pie graphs and unit conversions with proportions.

It is important that nurses or hospital employees wisely budget their time on the floor. • It is just as important that the hospitals resources are well spent. • Now you will assume the position of a NA, and record the various amounts of time spent on each task. • You will also be given the schedule for the typical R.N. • Take this data and create a pie graph representing a typical days work for these people. • Refer to overhead time chart A and handout chart B.
