  1. COOL CHANGE • lyrics by LITTLE RIVER BAND If there's one thing in my life that's missingIt's the time that I spend aloneSailing on the cool and bright clear waterLots of those friendly peopleAnd they're showing me ways to goAnd I never want to lose their inspirationTime for a cool changeI know that it's time for a cool changeAnd now that my life is so prearrangedI know that it's time for a cool change Well, I was born in the sign of waterAnd it's there that I feel my bestThe albatross and the whales they are my brothersIt's kind of a special feelingWhen you're out on the sea aloneStaring at the full moon, like a lover Time for a cool changeI know that it's time for a cool changeNow that my life is so prearrangedI know that it's time for a cool change I've never been romanticAnd sometimes I don't careI know it may sound selfishBut let me breathe the air, yeahLet me breathe the air If there's one thing in my life that's missingIt's the time that I spend aloneSailing on the cool and bright clear waterIt's kind of a special feelingWhen you're out on the sea aloneStaring at the full moon, like a lover Time for a cool changeI know that it's time for a cool changeNow that my life is so prearrangedI know that it's hard for a coolCool, cool change It's time, it's time, it's timeIt's time, it's time, it's timeFor a cool, cool changeOooooh, I know it's time for a coolCool, cool changeNow that my life is so prearrangedWell, I know, I know, I know, I knowThat it's time for a cool changeYes it is, yes it is, yes it is, yes it isIt's Time for a cool change

  2. Statistics about recycling:One ton of paper towels consumes 17 trees, fills 3 cubic tons of landfill space, and pollutes 20,00 gallons of water….

  3. The average American generates 4.6 pounds of trash each day.Household trash only accounts for 2% of the waste generated in the United States.

  4. What can be recycled? • What happens to the stuff we recycle? • What happens to the stuff we don’t recycle? • How much of our junk ends up in a landfill? • Can everything be recycled? Can anything NOT be?

  5. Glass can be used over and over and it can be recycled into other glass materials;plastic can be recycled into carpet, fleece and other items;newspapers can be recycled into paper, tissue and new newspaper;cardboard can be recycled into new cardboard or reused;aluminum can be recycled over and over to make new cans and batteries can be recycled into multiple products.

  6. IB Project due next Tuesday • “How can changing my personal habits change our world?” • In math class, we have learned how to use math statistics and patterns, and now you will use those skills to analyze a real world scenario: patterns related to the disposal and recycling habits of people just like us. We will be devising an environmental campaign to raise awareness of waste management by suggesting ways of reducing, reusing or recycling waste to reduce the loss of natural resources.

  7. In this unit, we will be:Answering these Questions:What are the historic and current recycling trends in the U.S.A.?What is the environmental impact of waste disposal? What are ways to prevent the negative impacts of waste produced in the U.S.A.?

  8. Assessed using these Math Objectives: (please see the rubric)B: Investigating patternsD: Reflection in Mathematics Your Task: Make Locke School students and staff more aware of the different types of recycling and the benefits of recycling using mathematical statistics and patterns as your factual evidence. You may choose any type of waste disposal and/or recycling you wish to promote the reuse of, and you must do so in a creative way (as a campaign poster, video, pamphlet, PowerPoint, or any other creative way to get the word out).

  9. Steps to complete this project must include, but are not limited to the following:You must research statistics on the material you are encouraging Locke school to reuse. Also, research what other countries besides the United States are doing to reuse and recycle. Where do we stand in comparison to them? (Websites below will get you started). You must convey your method using patterns similar to the ones we discussed in class. Your patterns should be original in their creation, not copied from a website. For example, if the statistics you find illustrate how many bottles are used every five minutes, make a chart saying how many are used in an hour, day, month or year! You may also use any other type of math such as graphs and tables, charts, and pie graphs to convey your message. In your display or as a separate paper, reflect on the following questions: What are the benefits of recycling? What can we do to encourage more recycling? What power can mathematics give us to communicate environmental issues to the world? How can my personal habits change my world

  10. Additional Resources:www.aluminum.org - this is a very cool website using math statistics that shows what happens to aluminum cans after we dispose of them.www.epa.gov -this is a website that is from the United States government Environmental Protection Agency. Tons of cool topics to click on regarding our environment and recycling!www.recycling-revolution.com/recycling-facts.html - Lots of cool facts for you to use about recycling!www.thefutureschannel.com- Videos of all kinds about reusing and recycling!www.thinkoutsidethebottle.org -this is a revolutionary website that challenges the bottled water industry!www.chrisjordan.com This is the coolest website of all! Photographer Chris Jordan has some very powerful images to make you THINK about the NEED for recycling! Some images were shared in class.
