  1. Lesson Objectives By the end of the lesson you will: Be able to describe the advantages and disadvantages of a range of input and output devices.

  2. Starter • What is an Input device? • Hardware devices which allow data to be enteredinto a computer. • What is an Output device? • A device which allows you to get data out of a computer.

  3. Starter What is this? CRT Monitor Can you describe it? A monitor displays text and image data passed to it by the computer. It has a cathode ray tube.

  4. Starter What is this? Inkjet Printer Can you describe it? Prints images/text to paper using ink. The print-head passes left and right across the paper. However, instead of using pins to hit inky marks onto the paper, the ink-jet squirts tiny droplets of ink onto the surface of the paper.

  5. Starter What is this? Buzzer Can you describe it? Buzzers can provide noise. For example, the buzzer in a microwave oven can be switched on by the controlling computer when the food is cooked.

  6. Starter What is this? Magnetic strip reader Can you describe it? A magnetic strip reader is used to read the data from the strip on a credit/debit card. This is usually done by ‘swiping’ the card through a slot on the reader.

  7. Think about it… • Some people think that devices such as keyboards are used for all computers. • But you would not see one here…. • Or here… • That is because each device has advantages anddisadvantages.

Task Identify suitable uses of input/output devices stating the advantages and disadvantages of each. • Complete the worksheet you have been given - read it carefully. • In your book, list 2 advantages and 2 disadvantages for the devices listed below. • Use the PDF on the VLEand www.igcseict.info to complete the tasks. • Range of Sensors • Graphics Tablet • Light Pens • CRT monitor • TFT monitor • Laser Printer • Inkjet printer • Dot Matrix printer • Plotter • Speakers • Projectors
