Board structure, roles and responsibilities • Average number of board members – 11 • The majority of NGB boards are entirely volunteer-run • 52 per cent have at least one independent, non-executive on their board • Average number of board meetings per year – six • On average, more than four fifths (83 per cent) of board members usually attended meetings

Conclusion • This report describes what boards of NGBs are doing • The majority of NGB boards are entirely volunteer-run • The voluntary nature of the board and the size of the NGB may help to explain why many NGBS do not have in place a range of formal approaches to board development • However the majority of NGBs agreed that the board was involved in strategy development either through approving the strategy or working alongside the board to develop the strategy • For 2011 two in-depth case studies of NGBs will be undertaken to better understand how boards function
