  1. Chapter 10 Forces

  2. Essential Questions • How is a force described? • How do balanced and unbalanced forces affect an object’s velocity?

  3. Force and Net Force • Force is a push or a pull on an object. • Net force is the total force on an object.

  4. Unbalanced ForceBalanced Force The balanced forces are the forces in equal and opposite directions. • Unbalanced Force can cause an object to, stop moving, or change direction.

  5. Forces change motion.

  6. HMM…. Can you see the unbalanced force here?

  7. Essential Questions • What is Newton’s first law of motion? • What is Newton’s second law of motion?

  8. Newton’s First Law Inertia Greater mass means Greater inertia • An object at rest will stay at rest unless acted upon by an outside force. • Inertia is every objects resistance to change its motion.

  9. Take out a piece of paper and label it “Inertia Mini Lab”

  10. Newton’s Second Law • The acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the net force acting on the object and inversely proportional to the object’s mass.

  11. Force=mass x acceleration F=m x a Or a = Force/ mass a = F/m

  12. Equation for Newton It’s the same as the force equation! Newton=m x a.

  13. Force and mass determine acceleration.

  14. Luke! Use the mass times the acceleration!

  15. Friction

  16. Essential Questions • What factors determine the strength of the friction force between two surfaces? • What factors affect the gravitational force between two objects? • Why do objects accelerate during free fall? • When is matter considered to be elastic?

  17. 3 Types of Friction • The 3 types of friction are: • Sliding friction (strongest) • Rolling friction • Fluid friction (weakest).

  18. What type of friction?

  19. What type of friction?

  20. What type of friction?

  21. 2 Factors of Friction • 1-Type of surface. • 2-How hard the two surfaces push together.

  22. Which type of hockey has more friction?

  23. Gravity

  24. Air Resistance and Weight • Air resistance is a type of fluid friction on falling objects. Weight is the force of gravity on an object at the surface of the Earth.

  25. Law of Universal Gravitation • Gravity acts between all objects in the universe.

  26. Gravity Between Objects • The force of gravity between objects increases with greater mass and decreases with greater distance.

  27. Gravity

  28. Gravity is the force that pulls objects toward the Earth- acceleration due to gravity is 9.8m/s/s.

  29. Pgs. 56-61 Newton’s Third law • If an object exerts a force on another object, the second object, exerts an equal force in the opposite direction.

  30. Essential Questions • What is Newton’s third law of motion? • How can you calculate the momentum of an object? • What is the law of conservation of momentum?

  31. Momentum • The momentum of an object is the product of its mass and velocity. • In other words: Momentum = mass x velocity Kg x m/s

  32. COLLISIONS

  33. Law of Conservation of Momentum • The total momentum of the objects that interact does not change.
