Background Do these names sound familiar? • The Nation of Tanzania -Tanganyika (mainland) + Mafia, Pemba and Zanzibar (islands) • Location -Eastern Africa, bordering the Indian Ocean, between Kenya and Mozambique • Size (including the islands) -362,820 sq. miles -slightly larger than twice the size of California Serengeti Zanzibar Kilimanjaro

  3. Background • 25 regions including islands • Population -36.2 million (July 2001 estimate) • Capitol - Dodoma • Business center -Dar-es-Salaam • National language - (Ki)Swahili • Official language - English

  4. The People of Tanzania • Mosaic of people -99% native African 95% Bantu with more than 130 tribes 5% primarily Cush and Nilotes -1% are Asian, European and Arab. • Religion -Christian 45%, Muslim 35%, indigenous beliefs 20%; -Zanzibar: more than 99% Muslim

Significant facts about Tanzania • Country where modern man may have originated -skull of Zinjathropus and bones of Homo habilis and Homo-erectus found by Louis Leakey in Olduvai Gorge • 500 miles of palm-fringed coastline with silver sands and coral reefs • Snow-capped Mt. Kilimanjaro only 3 degrees below the equator -highest mountain in Africa (19, 340 ft) -highest free-standing mountain in the world
