  2. FAMILY LIFE! • Travel alone or in small groups. • A baby manatee is called a calf. • They play by rolling, swimming upside down, and doing somersaults. • Can live up to 45 years in captivity. Manatees stick close to their calves, like in this picture!

  3. LOOKS! • Large bodies, small heads, and whiskered snouts. Paddle shaped tail. Special upper lip. 440-1,320 lbs. 6-15 feet.

  4. HOME! Live in freshwater rivers, lagoons, lakes, and other freshwater areas. • Warm waters • West indies, South America, western Africa, and Florida. Higher then 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

  5. FOOD Fish, aquatic vegetation, and sea grass. Alligators and humans are the ONLY predators a manatee has!

  6. COOL FACTS! Manatees are extinct from Australia. The closest land animal is an elephant Manatees and Dugongs are related. Can travel up to 20 mph (only when they're scared..) Christopher Columbus thought manatees were mermaids when he first saw them.
