  • Lots of key information delivered at busy time by multiple College services
  • Late start students miss parts of the induction
  • Information may not be retained or understood.
  • Learners could not easily revisit the information in a single, accessible place.
  • Information in language that is not meaningful to learners (especially entry level and ESOL learners)
  • Opportunity to standardise and streamline college-wide student induction process

  • RSC annual event (“e-Factor”) showcasing innovative use of technology for learners in London area: animated guides to specific services in use and well-received at Newham College
  • Animated guides in widespread use on Internet.
  • E-Solutions is one of the four key strategic objectives at CNWL
  • Learners’ favourable reaction and feedback to other information delivered online, or by video

  • A single short, focused, humorous animated induction:
    • 8 core services/topics condensed into a ‘storyboard’ based on 3 key messages only
    • Animation concept sourced and commissioned
    • Delivered online via College’s learning platform (VLE).
    • Shown in class to all students in first week of programme

The Impact
  • Standardised student induction across college:
    • Learners view a coherent, unified package that they can revisit as and when needed
    • Retention/understanding of key messages:
      • 85% of students found this induction useful, increased from 73% in previous year
    • Teachers have a short and appealing means of ensuring key topics are covered in a standardized way.
    • The College looks and feels like a progressive organisation, ready to exploit technology in a purposeful way. Staff motivated to produce quality, visual materials, students to expect up-to-date media.

  • Other current initiatives:
    • E-learning hour: minimum 1 hour per week for each full-time course being delivered by using online resources
    • Cloud-based solution for student access and storage: early adopters of “Office 365 for Education”. Potential for cloud-hosted communication for learning
    • Wifi rolled out within College sites for users to access services and learning on own devices.
    • Video/media hosting platform for managing and exploiting visual learning resources, i.e. an “in-house YouTube”
