  2. Sponsored by the Collin County Bar Association • All schools in Collin County invited; 3-4 in Frisco • Case is generated by CCBA • 9 members: • 2 Defense Lawyers, 2 Prosecution Lawyers, 3 Witnesses, 1 Time Keeper, & 1 Alternate What is Mock Trial

Who can participate? • Practices: All grades; Competition: Just 8th graders • I am requesting funding to allow all participants to go to the competition, but only 8th graders will compete. • What can 6th and 7th graders do? • Learn courtroom etiquette and skills; practice debating & speaking • What does a practice look like? • Ranges from doing mock courtroom scenes, to analyzing a case, to making questions, to practicing speaking techniques. • Is there homework? • Yes. I cannot read and memorize the case for you. We will practice the techniques, but you must know the objections used in court and the case. • How is the team selected? • The best by teacher and peer evaluation using a rubric. I will also conference with you on the best position you can take to help the team. • What is the court case? • They are not released until Spring Break. This gives use time to practice, practice, practice. Then, when the case comes out…BOOM! We get right down to business. • When does Mock Trial meet? • Every Wednesday after school from 3:45-4:15. Check with the Theatre department if you are in rehearsals, check with the band to be sure about sectionals. The last Wednesday of every working month we WILL NOT meet because of the Griffin staff meeting. The dates are on the next slide. Frequently asked questions

  4. The Griffin Staff have meetings the last Wednesday of a working calendar month. On these days, there will be no Mock Trial. • September 26th • October 24th • November 28th • December 5th • January 30th • February 27th • March 27th • April 17th Will not meet

  5. Transportation (after school & day of competition) • The competition is a 2-day tournament. The first day for the “playoffs” and the second day for the finals. If we make the finals, we will need volunteers to help us drive. • Snacks (rotation schedule or I can stash them) • Everything’s easier with a snack. We’ll start a rotation schedule. • Courtroom experience and/or legal expertise • If you have family, friends, etc. that have experience with courtroom etiquette, I would love to have Q & A guest speaker. • Dinner for later practices (2times) • Late April and early May we will hold two, 2-hour sessions in order to run through the full case. I would love to coordinate some food for these practices. Opportunities to support mock trial
