  1. Asexual -v- Sexual Reproduction What are the differences?

  2. Asexual reproduction One parent Produces offspring that are clones, or identical, to the parent and each other The offspring get an exact copy of the parents DNA 3 types: mitosis, fission, and budding

  3. Sexual Reproduction Involves two parents Offspring is a genetic combination of the two parents Each parent cell has 2 copies of each chromosome (diploid cells) During meiosis, the parent cell divides twice, resulting in four reproductive cells (gametes) that have only one copy of each chromosome (haploid)

  4. Parent Cell Four haploid gametes

  5. Fertilization The sex cells from each parent combine to produce offspring with one full set of chromosomes. This leads to variation in the traits of the offspring due to different combinations of the chromosomes

  6. Mitosis –v- Meiosis Mitosis Meiosis • Parent cell – diploid • Nucleus divides once • 2 daughter cells produced • Daughter cells have same number of chromosomes as parent cell (diploid) • New cells are identical to the parent cell and each other • Used for growth, repair, asexual reproduction • Parent cell – diploid • Nucleus divides twice • 4 daughter cells produced • Daughter cells have half of the number of chromosomes as parent cell (haploid) • New cells have different combinations of parents DNA • Used for production of sperm and egg cells (gametes)
