  2. Ethics and Social Responsibility • Ethics is defined as the study of how decisions affect other people. It is also a study of people’s rights and duties, the moral rules that people apply in making decisions, and the nature of the relationships among people. • Social responsibility is defined in terms of what an organization does to influence the society in which it exists. • Ethics and Social responsibility are concepts that are fundamentally about the quality of our relationships over time.

  3. The Tools of Ethics • Values: Relatively permanent desires that seem to be good in themselves. • Rights: Claims that entitle a person to take a particular action. • Duties: Obligations to take specific steps or obey the laws. • Moral Rules: Rules for behavior that often become internalized as moral values.

  4. Institutionalizing Ethics • Code of conduct • Ethics committee • Ombudsman offices • Judicial bodies • Ethics training programs • Social audits which are reports describing activities in a given area of social interest such as environmental protection, workplace safety, or community involvement.
