  4. What’s in Chewing Tobacco Carcinogens- 28 cancer producing chemicals Nicotine- the addictive substance Other Chemicals Abrasives- Tears holes in your mouth/stomach Salts- off set nasty tobacco taste Sweeteners- make dip taste better

  5. Why do athletes start using Chewing Tobacco? • Friends/Teammates use it. • “Using tobacco will help me run faster and improve my physical endurance” • In fact, the opposite may happen. You could experience muscle weakness, shortness of breath and decreased physical performance. Tobacco harms all users, some more severely than others.

All Tobacco is Harmful • Cancer – mouth and throat cancer • Heart Disease – doesn’t relax your heart but makes it beat faster, • Dental Disease – cavities, gum irritation, hairy tongues, stained teeth, bad breath • Stomach Problems – can make small holes in your stomach • Loss of taste and smell • Physical Changes – being tired, muscle weakness, and dizziness

  8. Things to know about Smoking Tobacco • Cigarette smoke contains over 4,800 chemicals, 69 of which are known to cause cancer • Smokers die earlier than nonsmokers: 13.2 years for men and 14.5 years for women • Secondhand smoke is responsible for approximately 3,400 lung cancer deaths

Things to know about Alcohol • By the time students are in the eighth grade, 55 percent of students have at least tried alcoholic beverages • 8% of all ER visits each year for illness or injuries are associated with alcohol • Alcohol does not relieve sadness - it makes it worse • A daily glass of wine will add 10 pounds per year
