  6. Equal Rights Amendment • “Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.” • Proposed by Congress 1972 • Need 38 states to ratify • Only 35 did by 7 year deadline • Backlash by “New Right”

  7. Roe v. Wade • NOW and other groups worked for women’s right to have an abortion • 1973 Supreme Court ruled that right to privacy protects right to choose abortion in first trimester • The country is divided on the issue: today about 50% say pro-choice, 45% say pro-life
