  2. Independent Reading • Read silently • Explain what has happened in the plot of your book so far.

  3. Summarizing: You know what it means, but do you know how to do it? • When we summarize, we retell the most important ideas we came across in an informative text. • A good summary always includes the main idea of the work, and it briefly states the most important supporting details in a small amount of words. • When we summarize, we also paraphrase. That means that we take what the author says and put it into our own words. Not only does that help the reader understand and help us understand, it also lets us shorten the amount of words used and make things more brief.

The boy saw no scale around, so he said okay. The man ended up with $50.How? • He wrote "your exact weight" on the piece of paper.

  12. Brain Break • A magician was boasting one day at how long he could hold his breath under water. His record was 6 minutes. A kid that was listening said, "that's nothing, I can stay under water for 10 minutes using no types of equipment or air pockets!" The magician told the kid if he could do that, he'd give him $10,000. The kid did it and won the money. Can you figure out how? • The kid filled up a glass of water and held it over his head for ten minutes

  13. Reviewing summarizing (3 minutes) • A good summary always includes the main idea • A good summary always briefly restates the most important supporting details • A good summary is always short • In a good summary, we paraphrase, or put things into our own words

  15. Quick notes (3 minutes): • When we summarize, we are going to imagine that our summaries are classified ads. • Each word we use will cost ten cents. • We will only be allowed to spend a certain amount on each ad.

  16. I do: Ms. Welsh shows you what’s up. • Ms. Welsh only has two dollars to spend on this summary. How many words is she allowed to use? • Twenty.

  17. Step one: She finds the main idea. • Main idea of paragraph one: • Topic + Message = Main idea • She needs to ask…what is the topic? • Topic: Civil Rights • Message: African Americans did not have privileges in the 1960s. .

Step two: She summarizes - Ms. Welsh’s summary • Remember, she only has two dollars! • She needs to include the main idea and mention some important supporting details. • She came up with… • Blue=supporting details • Red=main idea [In 1963] Because of segregation and discrimination, African Americans did not have the rights and freedoms they deserved Notice how she paraphrased! She did not say exactly what Dr. King said.

They use a substance called selenium. Selenium produces a bad smell when dissolved. A bit of this element is put in the ground near trees. Rain dissolves the selenium, and the trees absorb it.   27. I do: Answering an Sr (3 minutes) The trumpet produces many different sounds. They range from a piercing call to battle to a soft, romantic melody. Throughout history, trumpets have signaled the arrival of royalty, opened celebrations, and announced the time of day. The military has used trumpet calls as a part of its daily routine. The stirring "Reveille" plays in the morning, while the soulful sound of "Taps" ends the day. The different tones of the trumpet can express the full range of human emotion. In an orchestra, the trumpet may start out supporting the basic harmonies and end with a soft, flowing melody. In a jazz ensemble, the trumpet section will provide the excitement of an up-beat piece only to follow with a soft ballad. Changes in tone are also made by inserting mutes into the bell of the instrument.Which is the best summary of this passage? A. Trumpets are used by the military throughout the day. The education bill approved by the House last week gives students in low-performing schools the option to transfer to charters.
