energypedia is a web 2.0 platform that provides free access to expert information on renewable energy and energy efficiency in developing countries. Users can contribute and edit content, making it a collaborative platform for knowledge sharing.

  2. Introduction • Approximately 2,7 billion people are deprived of clean and energy efficient cooking technologies. Around 1,3 billion have no access to electricity. • Access to energy is a prerequisite of human development (individual survival, education and health) and a critical input into all economic sectors (household production, farming or industry). • The wealth and development status is closely correlated to the level of energy access. 2

Introduction • Web 2.0 Platform: • based on the Wikipedia-software – everyone can read, write, and edit articles • Knowledge Platform: • offers free access to expert information on renewable energy and energy efficiency in developing countries • Working Platform: • workspaces for organizations, NGO’s, universities, etc. • Vision: • A world in which all people have access to clean, modern, renewable energy and make use of it in an efficient way. 3

How energypedia works • Users ≠ passive consumers • Users create and edit content • Direct user interaction • Famous applications: • Social networking sites (e.g. FB) • File sharing sites (e.g. YouTube) • Wikis (e.g. Wikipedia) • Successful because all users can contribute http://www.epic.co.uk 4

About energypedia 2007 • Internal project wiki: Developed within the Dutch-German energy partnershipEnergising Development (EnDev), implemented by GIZ as internal tool for knowledge and project management. • energypedia was born: EnDev wiki was re-launched as a separate workspace under the now known name "energypedia". Registered users can read and edited on energypedia. • Public launch of energypedia: Energypedia becomes public. Energypedia can be read by unregistered users. • energypedia becomes independent: Founded as a NGO, independent from GIZ. Starts working in own office in April 2012. • Today, energypedia counts more than 750 articles and 1,900 users worldwide 2010 2011 today 5

  6. How a wiki works • A wiki consists of several individual articles. • You can set links to connect articles with each other. • Some articles can work as overview pages or portals. • Categories gather articles to one topic. Portal / start page Category Link Wiki articles Category Link 6

  12. Functions • Get in contact with other users, colleagues, energy experts, … • Leave messages on their board • Choose if they are private or public (everyone can read them) 12

  14. Functions • The Actions button offers different functions, amongst which the “View history” is the most important. • Click on the version’s date to see that specific version. • Select two versions and compare them to see the differences. • “Undo” restores the prior version of this page. 14

  18. How to add information? • Data entry according to a predetermined form and data display according to a specified template. • “Edit with form” button instead of “Edit” button for normal wiki pages. • Database overview pages allow sorting and searching according to different criteria. • While a selection of criteria is shown on the overview page, more details can be accessed by clicking on the single product name. 18

  19. How to add information? • To create a new article enter the preferred title in the search panel and hit "enter". Please check also the “Guidelines to make Good Articles” • Now click on the red link and the Editor will open. 19

  21. How to add information? • To edit an article click “Edit” on top • You can find the same Buttons on top of each article 21

How to add information? • With the editor you can create or work on an article by editing it and making it • graphically attractive to read. • The editor is shown if you have clicked on the “edit button” on top of all wiki • pages. • Rich Text Editor: • Wiki Text Editor: Shows the more technical wiki text 22
