The Genitive Case. This case has three uses: USE #1 : To show possession or that something is an integral part of something else . z.B . The man’s dog has just eaten our rabbit . Der Hund des Mannes hat gerade unser Kanninchen gefressen . e.g. I don’t like the colour of the door .

  1. The Genitive Case • This case has three uses: • USE #1: To show possession or that something is an integral part of something else. • z.B. The man’s dog has just eaten our rabbit. • DerHunddes Mannes hat geradeunserKanninchengefressen.

  2. e.g. I don’t like the colour of the door. • Ichmagnicht die FarbederTür. • e.g. I heard the screaming of the child. • Ichhörte das Schreiendes Kindes. • NOTE: Masculine and neuter nouns add ‘s’ or ‘es’ to the end when in Genitive case. • Add ‘es’ for a 1-syllable word, and ‘s’ for a word with more than one syllable! • z.B. der Ring  Preis des Ringes derFernseher  Größe des Fernsehers

  3. It translates as of the, of my etc. • Ichmag den Freund meinesBruders. • I like my brother’s friend. • Literally ~ I like the friend of my brother.

  4. USE #2 To express phrases of time beginning with ‘one’, like ‘one day’, ‘one fine day’. • These are: • einesTages (einesschönenTages) • einesMorgens • einesNachmittags • einesAbends • einerNacht.

  5. USE #3 There are also a few prepositions which always have to be followed by this case.

(He went outside despite the bad weather). (He arrived late because of an accident). (She bought a jacket instead of a sweater). (He fell asleep during the lecture).

  8. So how do I use it?

  9. When using GENITIVE case, you must change the articles of certain words... (Remember: Articles are the words for THE and A.) ...just like you would for Accusative or Dative Case!

  10. THE words: Definite Articles = Der/Die/Das

  11. A words: Indefinite Articles = Ein/Eine etc
