  3. The Founder : Jeni Britton Bauer Jeni Bauer is a Columbus made entrepreneur who founded Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream in 2002. Jeniattended The Ohio State University where she studied art. She began baking during this time and also became very interested in collecting essential oils. As her passion for essential oils continued to grow, she started to believe her career would land her in the perfume industry. However, one day while experimenting with ice cream, she found that she was able to combine her love of cooking and essential oils, when she used oils to enhance the ice cream she had made. Round #1 : Scream Ice Cream Jeni Bauer started her first homemade ice cream company, Scream Ice Cream, in 1996 in the North Market in Columbus, Ohio Although this first test run did not take off, Jeni attributes a lot of her success in Jeni’s to Scream Ice Cream because she was able work out kinks and learn from the mistakes she made while running Scream Ice Cream, along with the knowledge Jeni gained from working at La Chatelaine. The company’s Lemon Frozen Yogurt was named recently named “Best Dessert” by the Specialty Food Retailers Association, and Britton Bauer received the James Beard Foundation Award for her New York Times bestseller, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams at Home. Retail stores have increased from four to 10, including a 2011 expansion to East Nashville, Tenn.
