  4. Early Resolutions Officer Description: Administer and obtain businesses’ voluntary compliance with Employment Standards legislation and regulations. Duties will include: provide general and case-specific information and advice to clients or stakeholders, as well as explain legislation and related statutes and making referrals to other sources.

  5. Early Resolutions Officer Continued… Qualifications: Demonstrated knowledge of the Employment Standards Act 2000 and other related provincial and federal legislation. Ability to interpret and apply legislation, regulations and policies; dispute / conflict resolution and negotiation skills, and a demonstrated knowledge of investigative and interview techniques.

  6. Document Processor Description: Provide timely data entry related services to the Provincial Claim Centre. Duties will include: view, copy and categorize incoming claims documents, enter all data from faxed or mailed claims into a database, generate and mail standardized acknowledgment letters for claimants, proofread data-entries to ensure accuracy, and identify problems in documents.

  7. Document Processor Continued… Qualifications: Strong organizational & time management skills. Ability to work in a high-volume processing environment. Demonstrated written communication skills, reading comprehension skills and detail-orientated. Ability to read document information with comprehension, and input data correctly; ability to work with confidential issues & documents; advanced experience in office equipment and software applications.

  8. Claims Processor Description: Review and assess claims and supporting documents for errors, follow up with claimants and office staff to resolve issues, provide information based on the Employment Standards Act 2000 to respond factually to routine enquiries from employees and claimants and perform database searches and inputting. Communicate the status of claims to internal and external clients, and produce standardized correspondence.

Claims Processor Continued… Qualifications: Strong organizational, time management and coordinating skills to work in a fast-paced, high-volume environment; good judgment and accuracy; excellent verbal and written communication & interpersonal skills to communicate with internal/external clients; comprehension and analytical skills, and attention to detail; demonstrated experience in office equipment and software applications; ability to work with confidential issues.

Where are the Job Postings? • New OPS job competitions are posted every Friday on www.gojobs.gov.on.ca • Each posting provides a brief overview of the job, the qualifications you should meet to be considered, and application information, including competition number, method of submission, and application deadline

  15. Increasing Your Chances of Getting an Interview • Applications are screened against the qualifications given in the job ad. For this reason, tell how your skills, knowledge and abilities match those qualifications • Be specific in your work experience • Tailor your application to the job • Include both a resume and a cover letter. Both are screened for relevant skills, knowledge and experience. • In your cover letter, also show your knowledge of the job and ministry/branch • Have at least two people review your resume and cover letter for spelling/grammar errors, accuracy, and completeness

Characteristics of an Effective Resume • Includes your current contact information at the top of the first page – if this info will be changing, include the new information and the date on which it will be changed • Emphasizes experiences and accomplishments that match those required for the job • Includes specific, up-to-date experience instead of stating your job title • Its spacing, headings, and fonts make it easy to read • Has no white out or pencil or pen corrections on it • Has no spelling/grammatical errors • Accompanied by a tailored cover letter

  17. A Computer-Friendly Resume/Using Technology Effectively If submitting your application by email: • Make sure any attachment is a Microsoft Word or PDF document. This will ensure that the document can be opened (many ministry computers cannot open WordPerfect documents) • Avoid unusual or hard-to-read fonts • Submit your application using a professional email address – avoid inappropriately-named addresses • Prior to submission, email your application to yourself to ensure that it will transmit properly • If including your application in the body of an email, send it to yourself first to see how it will look • Place the cover letter before the resume – ensure it is received by the due date – print your confirmation and keep it

  18. If submitting your application by fax: • Ensure that the fax machine is at a reputable location with well-maintained equipment and that transmissions are clear and legible. Poor quality faxes often have lines running down them and are difficult to read • Double-check the fax number before sending • Ensure your application is at the receiving destination by the due date • Keep a copy of the successful fax transmittal

  20. The OPS Interview Process • Standardized process • Usually a panel interview with 2 or 3 interviewers • All candidates are asked the same questions. These questions are directly related to the qualifications of the position • The interview process may include some form of testing and/or a presentation

Preparing For The Interview • Try to anticipate some of the questions that will be asked during the interview, and prepare thoughtful answers • Prepare a brief profile of yourself, a list of your key strengths, and personal career/work experience review detailing your accomplishments, and your future career goals • Prepare explanations of how you meet each qualification and find examples of when you have done things related to the qualifications (i.e. problem-solving skills – when have you encountered a difficult problem, what was it, what action did you take to solve it, what was the outcome?)

Keys to a Successful Interview • Dress professionally • Use a firm handshake, sit up straight, make eye contact, and smile • Be early • Take a list of references with you • Be familiar with the position and organization • Know what you’ve done and what experience and skills you can bring to the job

Express yourself clearly and with good diction • Take time to think before answering difficult or complex questions • Don’t be shy to ask for verification or rewording. • When answering questions, don’t assume that the interviewers have read your application – answer as though they know nothing about you • You may ask questions to the panel (eg. When will you be making a decision about this job?)
