  1. Starter: In your writing journals, write for 10 mins on: “A moment that changed my life” Aim: To explore how poetic techniques create emotion.

  2. Independent learning Today, you are going to work independently, with no help from me. If you have a question, ask someone else in the class to help you (or solve the problem yourself). If you need help, ask a friend. There are no changes to my expectations of your behaviour. All the usual sanctions apply.

  3. Task 1: Look at the pictures that follow. Write one word down that describes each picture.

  4. Task 2: All of these pictures connect to the poem you will be reading. What ideas or themes do you think this poem might be dealing? Discuss with your partner, write some ideas down.

  5. Feedback Ok, someone start us off. What is the poem going to be about? Anyone else? Is that the cleverest idea you have? What is the best idea we have got?

  6. Auschwitz by Elizabeth Wise Ok, let’s read the poem. A volunteer please? Yes, it does have swearing in it…

  7. What is the poem about? Someone start us off: The poem Auschwitze is about… The poems shows the ideas of… The emotions shown in the poem are…

  8. Analysing the techniques used: Work with the person next to you. Annotate the following: Connect the techniques used to the emotions the poet was trying to show. Think about what the words suggest. Consider alternative meanings / ideas. Find an example of: • Shock tactics • Alliteration • Ellipsis • Strong verbs • Religious imagery • Unusual punctuation • Adjectives

  9. Q: What techniques does the poet use to create an emotional response in the reader? What are the success criteria for answering this question?

  10. PQE Let’s write one PQE together, then you can write one in your pair. We are going to use the quote: “all eyes watching, wondering.” • What’s the technique? • What the technique reveal?

  11. Wise uses alliteration to show time passing in the gas chamber. For example, “all eyes watching, wondering.” The alliteration “watching, wondering” has the effect of slowing the pace of the poem, the reader is placed alongside those in the gas chamber waiting for what is to come. For reader this line create empathy with those in the gas chamber, as well as nervousness and anxiety about what is to come.
