  1. L 6:The Equal Sign At the end of this lesson you will be able to: Understand that the equal is not an operation response. It indicates balance. understand the concept of balance as it relates to equations. understand and work with concrete objects and symbolic representations (e.g. pictures, numbers, graphs, computer representations) develop logical thinking using pattern and logic to solve problems in the workplace transfer the concept of equal balance to careers in banking as a teller or cashier and loan officer

  2. Concept of Equality Equal means balance How many other ways could you balance the scale? Find 10 or more. = 0 + 5 3 + 2 10 – 5 100 – 95 25 ÷ 5 1 x 5 1 x 4 + 1 √25

  3. Balanced Equations? • One of these equations is NOT balanced? Can you find it? • 15 + 5 = 17 + 3 • 2 x 6 = 3 x 4 • 3 + 8 = 15 – 3 11 ≠ 12 • 2 x 8 = 11 + 5

  4. Translating Story Problems to Equations +Add, plus, and, altogether, increased, in all, more than, … - Subtract, difference, less than, spent, take have, decreased, fewer, … XTimes, twice, of, for each, ÷ Per, out of, half of, average, for… = Equals, is, the same as, in all, “now has”, would be, was… 1. Julie spent $5 at Starbucks and $40 on gas. How much did she spend in all? 5 + 40 = x 2. Julie borrowed $20 from her son and spent $11 on rabbit food. How much did she have left for coffee? 20 – 11 = x 3. This week Julie spent $20 for coffee and $8 for magazines. This is the same as last week when she spent $10 for coffee and $16 for magazines. (True or False?) 20 + 8 = 10 + 16 T or F

  5. Pet Parade Hints 2 kitties and 2 mice are equal to 2 dogs, and 2 dogs also = 3 birds 1 kitty is = to 1 mouse and 1 bird then 3 kitties are equal to 3 mice and 3 bird We know already that 3 birds are = to 2 kitties and 2 mice. So now the equation looks like this: 3 kitties= 3 mice + 2 kitties and 2 mice
