  2. William Shakespeare -baptized on April 26, 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon (~ 100 mi from London) -estimated birthday, April 23 -7 siblings -dad was a leatherworker/glover & mom was a local heiress -rumor has it that he died on his birthday in 1616

  3. Shakespeare, cont. -married to Anne Hathaway, she 26, he 18 -she was three months pregnant 3 kids: Susanna Twins, Judith & Hamnet -after the twins birth records, there are 7 years of no records of Shakespeare

  4. Shakespeare, cont. -because there are so few records of his early life & because of his lack of formal education, many people speculate as to whether or not he really wrote his materials -by 1592 he was back on the records as an actor & playwright -by 1597, 15/37 plays he’d written were published -he wrote 154 sonnets over his career

  6. Globe Theater -1599 built the Globe Theater -First burned down in a fire -Rebuilt, so one today is not the original

Going to the theater -shows during the day -the court & the townspeople at the same show -crowds would respond to plays happening -no females allowed--women were played by young men/boys -Hamlet takes 4 hours to perform (crowd in the pit would stand this whole time) -Flags would be displayed to show what kind of play it would be: white, black, & red

Why do we care about this? -While the language seems old & outdated, the meanings of the plays carry themes & ideas that are still as powerful as ever. -Challenging ourselves to read this type of text makes us a stronger reader and thinker. -The longevity and popularity of these works have brought people together and still do. -Popular culture is constantly referencing Shakespeare.
