Talk about symbolism used today around us – power point of logos, graffiti, ancient and modern symbols4. Explain assignment: Procedures: 1. Start with a balance plan – symmetrical, asymmetrical, radial2. Choose 2-3 other principles you want to emphasize3. Use objective pictures, lettering or symbols or non-objective designs but make sure the final design is original and not a copy of something you have seen. Talk about plagiarism. 4. Make several thumbnail size sketches to start brainstorming ideas on scrap paper5. Mini-lesson on lettering – basic block, bubble letters, using graph paper, stylized lettering6. Choose one of your sketches to create in full color – size 12X18 (30.5 x 46 cm) (or whatever size paper teacher selects) Special Notes: Draw lightly so your pencil lines don’t show through Be careful of black because it can smear and make your colors dirty – use last! Permanent Black Marker could be used for outlining if desired. If you paint, tape down paper to prevent curling To create their tags students make sketches of letters in various styles before settling on a final type design.Students then add additional design elements to create a truly personal tag. The final step is to use value shading and color blending to make these artworks vibrant and exciting - using color pencilsStart lightly and keep adding layers of color pencil - blending different shadesWith more layers, the color will become more vibrantThe color must be bold and vibrant - not light or too pastel-likeUse black sharpies to outline the designSee the examples (slides 13-17) that show these black lines are thicker on one side to create a shadow effect.

  3. add style to letter forms vary letter size overlap letters exaggerate letter shape

  4. add dimension with perspective with shading

  5. add design elements (arrows, stars, swirls, etc) add interest and individuality

  6. surround you tag with a border this helps “hold it together”
