The Ocean Basins

1 global ocean
1.Global Ocean

the body of salt water that covers nearly three-fourths of Earth’s surface.

2 sea
2. Sea

  • a large, commonly saline body

  • of water that is smaller than

  • an ocean and that may be

  • partially or completely

  • surrounded by land.

3 oceanography
3. Oceanography

  • the scientific study of the ocean,

  • including the properties and

  • Movement of ocean water, the

  • characteristics of the ocean

  • floor, and the organisms that

  • live in the ocean.

4 sonar
4. Sonar

sound navigation and ranging,

a system that uses acoustic

signals and returned echoes

to determine the location of

objects or to communicate.

5 continental margin
5. Continental Margin

the shallow sea floor that is

located between the shoreline

and the deep-ocean bottom.

6 deep ocean basin
6. Deep-Ocean Basin

  • the part of the ocean floor

  • that is under deep water

  • beyond the continent margin

  • and that is composed of

  • oceanic crust and a thin layer

  • of sediment.

7 trench
7. Trench

  • a long, narrow, and steep

  • depression that forms on the

  • ocean floor as a result of

  • subductionof a tectonic plate,

  • that runs parallel to the trend of a

  • chain of volcanic islands or the

  • coastline of a continent, and that

  • may be as deep as 11 km below

  • sea level.

8 abyssal plain
8. Abyssal Plain

a large, flat, almost level area

of the deep-ocean basin.

9 core sample
9. Core Sample

a cylindrical piece of sediment,

rock, soil, snow, or ice that is

collected by drilling.

10 nodule
10. Nodule

  • a lump of minerals that is

  • made of oxides of manganese,

  • iron copper, or nickel and that

  • is found in scattered groups

  • on the ocean floor.

11 desalination
11. Desalination

a process of removing salt

from ocean water.

12 precipitation
12. Precipitation

  • any form of water that falls

  • to Earth’s surface from the

  • clouds; includes rain, snow,

  • sleet, and hail.

13 condensation
13. Condensation

  • the change of state from a

  • gas to a liquid.

14 evapotranspiration
14. Evapotranspiration

  • the total loss of water from an area,

  • which equals the sum of the water

  • lost by evaporation from the soil and

  • other surfaces and the water lost by

  • transpiration from organisms.

15 water cycle
15. Water Cycle

  • the continuous movement of

  • water between the

  • atmosphere, the land, and

  • the oceans.
