  1. Should scientists be allowed to research embryonic stem cells? By: Katie Goss

  2. Overview • What is a embryonic stem cell. • How it can help. • Religious debate or government?

  3. What is an embryonic stem cell? • Embryonic stem cells are embryonic cells that come from in vitro eggs, but NOT from eggs that were in a women’s body. • The eggs then are “grown” in the lab for about five days then the cells are transferred into small microscopic cell balls called, blastocyst.

  4. The three stages • The blastocyst is a three stage cell, the three stages are trophoblast this is the layer that surrounds the cell. • Then there is the inner cell mass. The inner cell mass’s function is about 30 cells at the end of the blastocyst

  5. What can it do? • The idea of cells that can divide and duplicate, and replace hurt, dead, and dying cells is not a new idea or concept. • A good example for a person that was really into was Christopher Reeve’s. • He was looking for something to put his nerves and back to the waythey were.

  6. Other ideas • The research have also have hopes for patients that need organ transplant, with ideas to grown their own organs in a lab. • This can help people by growing the cell them selves, but the body will also make them into the right blood type, making it the exact make up of the persons genetic make up.

  7. Religious? • Catholics saying that conception starts at the cells, even going as far as having the Pope to talk to then U.S. president George W. Bush this leading to a document banning it. • Even though just reticently the now U.S. president Barack O’Bama has lifted the ban. • He believes that this type of research can become a extremely vital process to humans in need for repair of their body.

  8. Whats the main idea? • People that it can help is not only people that need organs, or nerves, but also it can help burn patients, “make” new skin, or people that are born with being paralyzed, make the nerves re-grow into there legs or arms.
