  1. Thursday 2/22/18 Notebook Entry: These sedimentary rocks are in the Claron Formation in Bryce Canyon (Utah). Identify what materialthese rocks are made of, what processes formed them and where the energy came from that caused this to happen.

  2. Journey on the Rock Cycle Comic • Task: Create a comic strip that models a journey on the rock cycle. • Purpose: Demonstrate your understanding of the materials, processes, and energy involved in forming rocks.

  3. Journey Through the Rock Cycle • Roll the dice & record on your sheet • Location (go to…) – if you roll remain here you write the name of the place • What happened • DO NOT WRITE ANYTHING ON THE 3rd line • Rule: If after 2 rolls of a station dice you have not moved to a new station, then you pick where to go next base on a different side of the dice. • Return to your original seat once you are finished.

  4. Hoodoos • Formation Name: Claron Limestone  • Rock Age: Paleocene or Eocene in age, 40-60 mya • Result of ancient lake that covered much of Western Utah. Minerals deposited within different rock types cause hoodoos to have different colors throughout their height.  • At Bryce Canyon, hoodoos range in size from that of an average human to heights exceeding a 10-story building. https://www.nps.gov/brca/learn/nature/hoodoos.htm

  5. Hoodoos are formed by two weathering processes • Frost wedging • Experience over 200 freeze/thaw cycles each year. In the winter, melting snow, in the form of water, seeps into the cracks and freezes at night. • When water freezes it expands by almost 10%, bit by bit prying open cracks, making them ever wider in the same way a pothole forms in a paved road. • Acidic Rain – slowly dissolves the limestone https://www.nps.gov/brca/learn/nature/hoodoos.htm

  6. To Do: • Fill out the 3rd line on your journey sheet. • Sediment • Lava • Magma • Igneous • Sedimentary • Metamorphic • When finished turn in your journey sheet
