  3. LOG 201 Course Description • “…the second part in a two-course series designed for intermediate acquisition logistics professionals. ..provides a dynamic, group-based, facilitated learning environment oriented toward further developing logistics competencies required by the life-cycle logistician during weapon system and equipment acquisition…challenges the professional to think critically, differentiate support alternatives, and provide solutions to ensure the early integration of operational supportability into the system development process.” –DAU iCatalog • Current version (v9) fielded July, 2010 • First “pure logistics” classroom course for life-cycle logisticians

  5. LCL Competency – DAU Curriculum Crosswalk Legend: • Principal course that addresses the competency Deployed course/significant upgrade in progress • Courses where the competency is a major learning point New course in development/planning Addressed, but not major learning point

  6. Key Personnel • Key Personnel • Course Manager • John Sullivan, DAU CNE • LCIC Performance Learning Director • Terry Johnson • Course Manager Regional Representatives • Capital and Northeast: Van Poindexter • West: Greg Schlauch • Midwest: Ed Eden • South: Ron Burgess • Mid-Atlantic: Dean Newman • LCIC Instructional Systems Design • James McDaniel

  8. Metrics & Demographics (cont.)

  9. LOG 201FY11 Demographic “Fun Facts” • Of respondents, only 2.71% had only a high school diploma • 39.66% had Bachelor’s • 30.22% had Master’s or higher • 27.41% had Associate’s or “Some College” • Of respondents, 95.51% recommended their colleagues take this course.

  10. Structure & Format • Current version of LOG 201 has 7 modules: • Module 1-1: Support Strategy Development • Module 1-2: Developing Product Support Attributes • Module 2-1: Apply Market Research Data to the Technology Development Strategy • Module 2-2: COTS/NDI/GFE Configuration Impact on Supportability • Module 3-1: Reliability Improvement • Module 3-2: Supportability Analysis Concepts • Module 4-1: Life Cycle Sustainment Planning (Capstone Exercise) • Focus of 201 is facilitated discussion and critical thinking exercises • Students encouraged to learn from one another…as opposed to lecture-intensive format • Each module has a minimum of one critical thinking exercise…most have two. • Final exercise requires total class coordination and preparation

  11. LOG 201 “Flow”

  12. LOG 201 Framework 1-1 Support Strategy Development 1-2 Developing Product Support Attributes 2-1 2-2 3-1 3-2 Apply Market Research COTS/NDI/GFE Impacts on Supportability Reliability Improvement Supportability Analysis Concepts 4-1 Life Cycle Sustainment Planning

  13. Module 1-1 Support Strategy Development TLO: Given a case study, assess the impacts of JCIDS, DAMS, PPBE, and System Operational Effectiveness Model (SOE) on Supportability strategy development for the case study objective weapon system.

  14. Module 1-2 Developing Product Support Attributes TLO: Given a case study Capability Development Document (CDD) and sample Performance Work Statement (PWS) information, students will identify the Key Performance Parameters (KPPs), Key System Attributes (KSAs), and other attributes relevant to product support and assess their impact on the Integrated Product Support (IPS) Elements.

  15. Module 2-1 Apply Market Research TLO: Given case study user requirements, the student will use market research data to shape the focus and logistics outcomes of the Technology Development Strategy.

  16. Module 2-2 COTS/NDI/GFE Impacts on Supportability TLO: Given case study performance requirements and component data, describe logistics impacts resulting from use and integration of COTS/NDI/GFE components in weapon system design.

  17. Module 3-1 Reliability Improvement TLO: Given case study logistics and developmental test (DT) data, the student will evaluate and recommend reliability improvements that maximize system availability within levels of available funding.

  18. Module 3-2 Supportability Analysis Concepts TLO: Given case study weapon system program documents and information on Supportability analysis concepts, analyze assigned elements of the maintenance support planning process and describe the assigned element’s purpose, relationship to other elements, potential risk areas, and the role of the Life Cycle Logistician.

  19. Module 4-1 Life Cycle Sustainment Planning TLO: Given a case study Life Cycle Sustainment Plan (LCSP) and other program documents, perform required analysis to produce and deliver a program logistics status brief in support of a Milestone C decision.

  20. PLD Assessment • LOG 201 needs ongoing vigilance: • Covers a broad range of acquisition logistics competencies • Highly susceptible to changes in DoD policy • Classroom courses a bit more agile in incorporating changes, but more challenging in “training the trainers.” • Significant update in FY 12 • Focus on LCSP iterative development • Modules focused on what is required in the LCSP and when • More “hands-on,” somewhat less “Wall Chart” • Emphasis on Design Interface and RAM retained and enhanced • Exercises made more challenging • Final exercise now a presentation of class-developed LCSP • Reorganized to “flow” better • But…principal aim was, “Do No Harm.”

  21. FY 12 RevisionModules and TLOs • TLOs: • -- Given a Life Cycle Sustainment Plan (LCSP) outline, • program, policy and framework documents, develop • a Product Support Strategy. • -- Given a Life Cycle Sustainment Plan (LCSP) outline, • program, policy and framework documents, develop • a Life Cycle Sustainment Plan (LCSP). • -- Given a Life Cycle Sustainment Plan (LCSP) outline, • program, policy and framework documents, develop • a Sustainment Quad Chart. 1-1: MSA-Setting the Stage • Impact of Regulatory/Statutory Environment 1-2: MSA • Intro to Product Support Strategy concept & IPS elements 2-1: Technology Development Strategy • Design Interface and Technology Development Strategy 2-2: Technology Development • Developing the Maintenance Concept 3-1: Technology Development, Cont. • IPS Elements and Refining the Strategy 3-2: EMD • Reliability, Cost and Risk 4-1: EMD, Cont. • Refining the Plan 4-2: Capstone Exercise • Deliverable is LCSP Brief and Completed Sustainment Quad Chart Each module has a minimum of one exercise…each exercise includes updating a draft LCSP.
