Movie Overview • A child’s parents need to speak their native languages to the child. • Infants learn two languages as if they were learning one. • Language needs to be reinforced to keep brain connections active. • Speaking multiple languages boosts brain development. • Speaking two languages causes children to think, understand and analyze. • Consistency and commitment from both parents is vital.

Basic Facts • Critical period: Birth to puberty • Delays age-related dementia • Simultaneous learning vs. sequential learning • Enhanced ability to concentrate as adult • Greater understanding of cultures • Greater recovery after brain injuries • By ages 2-3 they are sorting out and by 7 they have a strong grasp on the languages • Multitasking

Cognitive Benefits • Greater creativity • Organizing, planning, • Setting goals and anticipating outcomes • Greater focus and ability to tune out • Concept formation • Analogical reasoning • Visual/Spatial • Literacy Development • More freedom in learning • Denser brain matter in left hemisphere • Altered brain structure • Brain activity in the right hemisphere

Myths • Confusion • Speech impairment's • Takes more energy and brain space • Mixing languages • Slower language development • There’s only one way to do it • Limited vocabulary • Literacy disabilities • They’re just not as intelligent • The two languages were learned independently and would not transfer to the other language
