  15. POLL: What is STRATEGY? Strategy defines what is important to do. Strategy is a specific action taken to affect a given situation. A B

  16. Strategy entails many decisions An outline of key steps and approaches in accomplishing the goal. Strategy defines what is important to do – including: • Selection of key objectives • Appropriate targets • Understanding of needed constituencies • Resources • Decisions on which tactics to use and when

  17. POLL: What is a TACTIC? A specific action taken to affect a given situation. A source of inspiration which focuses on how the world can be in the future. A B

A Tactic is a specific action… Tactics are the levers or mechanisms to carry out a strategy. • A tactic is a specific action or systematic combination of actions taken to affect a given situation. • Tactics are one of the key building blocks of strategy. • Tactics are about “the how,” while strategies are about “the what.”

Target The person, place, group or segment of society where your tactical action is directed. • PLACE • Parliament • Newspaper • Religious Institution • School • Business • GROUP • Law makers • Bloggers • Women • Students • Businessmen • PERSON • Parliamentarian • Journalist • Religious leader • Teacher • Employer

  21. What we know how to do influences what we think is possible to do. Tactics help determine strategy. Amnesty International – Netherlands SMS Alert Network that engages youth in combating torture with text messaging.

  22. Different tactics are effective against different targets. Committee for the Administration of Justice (CAJ) – Northern Ireland Using international bodies to pressure UK government on detention practices.

  23. Different tactics appeal to different constituencies. Nigdy Wiecej (Never Again) - Poland Engaged popular soccer personalities to educate the public and combat racism.

  24. Tactical flexibility is the source of surprise. Korean Women Workers Associations United (KWWAU) - Korea Effectively engaged media with a wide variety of eye-catching actions to raise public awareness and change the minimum wage law.

  25. Tactics teach participants and observers how to engage in the world. Institute for Democracy in South Africa (IDASA) Grassroots capacity-building training to familiarize activists and community members with budget analysis process and skills.

  26. Tactics are the training systems for engaging participants and allies in the organization’s work. Center for Victims of Torture (CVT) - United States Instituted long-term, supervised training to build the capacity of refugees to provide psycho-social counseling to other refugees and their repatriated communities.
