  1. Introductions How to write an introduction

  2. Introduction Formula • Yes, there can be a formula for writing. Once you know what it is and how to use it, you can break away from it and be more creative. Learn the formula first, then we will step out of the box. • The Essay: E = T + 3P + N E= essay T= thesis P = body paragraph N = conclusion • The Introduction: I = h + (<3)l + T I = introduction h = hook l = elaboration T = thesis

  3. Hook: Catch the reader’s attention • intriguing example • “World grain reserves are so dangerously low that severe weather in the United States or other food-exporting countries could trigger a major hunger crisis next year [2013], the United Nations has warned” (Vidal). • provocative quotation • “The soil is the great connector of lives, the source and destination of all. It is the healer and restorer and resurrector, by which disease passes into health, age into youth, death into life. Without proper care for it we can have no community, because without proper care for it we can have no life” (Berry).

  4. Hook: Catch the reader’s attention • puzzling scenario • “Between 2010-13 North Carolina ranked among the top  five states with the highest percentage of citizens experiencing food shortages” (Food Banks). • thought-provoking question • Why are people around the world, in The United States, and in Concord, going hungry when high-yield crops are available?

  5. Elaborate • Explain your opening sentence and add any needed background information. “Between 2010-13 North Carolina ranked among the top five states with the highest percentage of citizens experiencing food shortages” (Food Banks). How is this possible with the amount of land dedicated to farming in the rural parts of the state? One reason is that the 2013 harvest of food crops in North Carolina were either unchanged in the amount of food produced or saw up to a thirty-six percent decrease (NCDA&CS). Perhaps if more high-yield genetically modified food crops, GMOs, were planted, fewer people in the state would be experiencing a food shortage. • “Between 2010-13 North Carolina…” = opening statement • “How is this possible…” = elaboration – tie it together

  6. Thesis • Revise your thesis so that there is a smooth transition between your elaboration and the thesis statement. • To ensure that the people of North Carolina have access to plentiful food, nutritious food, and a healthy, safe environment Molybdenum Advertising should accept Harris Teeter’s request to represent them in their future media campaign. • plentiful food = body paragraph 1 • nutritious food = body paragraph 2 • healthy, safe environment = body paragraph 3

  7. Introduction now reads … “Between 2010-13 North Carolina ranked among the top five states with the highest percentage of citizens experiencing food shortages” (Food Banks).
