  23. Drinking Water production; desalination Environmental Science 100 Issues and Solutions: Water distillation (2) reverse osmosis Used in the Gulf American desal plants favor a different technology -- reverse osmosis -- which forces the water through a series of membranes, leaving the salts behind.

  26. Water pollution; assessment of water quality Environmental Science 100 Issues and Solutions: Water Salinity ; conductivity; dissolved ions; phosphate+ nitrate+ sodium + potassium pH Phosphate and nitrate concentrations Temperature ‘Coliforms’: fecal bacteria Toxic organic chemicals: DDT, PCB, biocides Toxic metal ions: mercury, lead, cadmium etc Sediment; turbidometry

  40. Marine ecology; human impact Environmental Science 100 Issues and Solutions: Water The North Pacific sub-tropical gyre has a massive spiral of floating plastic crap floating over an area estimated from the size of Texas to bigger than the continental United States. Most of this plastic is from run-off from rivers and streams from around the world, much of it gradually breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces that eventually become as small as plankton. Already in vast areas of the ocean these plankton-sized particles outnumber the real particles by greater than 7 : 1.

  41. Marine ecology; human impact Environmental Science 100 Issues and Solutions: Water Plus oil from drilling rigs
