  7. Student Organization • Expand-a-file (graded papers, homework, school mail…) • Planner/Agenda Students will record daily objectives and homework assignments *Please check your child’s expand-a-file each night for graded papers and sign your child’s planner.

  13. Math This year in math we will learn: • Problem Solving (multi-step) • Place Value (through billions) • Multiplication and Division • Fractions and Decimals • Geometry • Measurement • Personal Finance Literacy

  16. Writing This year in writing we will focus on: • Narrative writing • Expository writing • Conventions/Spelling • Vivid Vocabulary • Sensory Details • Forming topic sentences with details • Writing strong beginnings and endings

  17. Reading Assessments and STAAR will focus on 4 genres: Fiction Expository Drama Poetry *** It will be important for students to know the structure of each genre and vocabulary associated with each type.

  18. Reading Students will learn the word “metacognition” and how to think about their reading using the following strategies: • Predicting • Visualizing • Making Connections • Asking Questions • Summarizing • Pausing to Clarify

  19. Science This year, our science units include: • Communicating as a Scientist • Diverse Plants • Natural Resources and Ecosystems • Matter and Energy • Force and Motion • Sun, Earth, and Moon • Atmosphere and Weather • Changes over Time (Earth Science)

  20. Social Studies This year in social studies we will learn: • Regions of Texas • American Indians • Explorers • Colonization • The Texas Revolution • How the Civil War impacted Texas • Economic Influences on Texas such as farming, cattle, oil, railroads • Branches of the government

Learner Qualities • Question – asking thoughtful questions • Think – reasoning, forming ideas, opinions • Connect – linking learning to previous learning • Self Aware – aware of how you learn best • Wonder – being curious and wanting to learn more • Reflect – thinking back to your learning to identify what was easy, what was challenging, and what comes next • Determined – stick with difficult tasks without giving up
