  2. Major Category • Hallucinogen • a group of drugs that changes the way a person sees, hears, and feels things around him/her

  3. History of LSD • 1949- doctors at Boston Psychopathic Hospital (now MA Mental Health Center) learned about and obtained LSD to experiment with it • LSD showed potential in treatment of psychological disorders such as schizophrenia 5

  4. History of LSD • 1951- CIA wanted to investigate LSD • They thought it could possibly be used as a truth serum • They tested LSD on soldiers and students • Experiment went awry when a test subject jumped out a window and fell to his death 6

  5. History of LSD • Was used as a recreational drug in the 1960’s as part of the hippie culture • Banned in United States in 1967 • Ken Kesey used his experiences and observations of taking LSD in his novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest 2

Physiological Effects of LSD • Can cause miscarriage • Lysergic acid diethylamide blocks the serotonin receptors in the brain • Serotonin regulates mood, appetite, sensory perception, and other nervous system functions • When the serotonin receptors are blocked, nerves in brain get confused and send out false signals • The false signals result in trips 4

  11. Tripping --A trip is a hallucination • Senses are distorted • Sounds become louder • Colors seem more vivid • Most common effect of hallucinogens --Some lead to overwhelming panic and anxiety; known as bad trips --A trip can last twelve or more hours, depending on the drug 3

  12. Tripping Physical signs of tripping: • Dilated pupils • Increased body temp, heart rate, and blood pressure • Nausea • Dry mouth • Shivering, shaking, and sweating • Numbness • Lack of coordination • Abnormal breathing

  13. PsychologicalEffects • Causes trips • Mental instability • Anxiety • hallucinations

  14. Should LSD be legalized? • No • Since it is a hallucinogen, it can make a person see/hear things that do not exist • Has unpredictable effects, except it is evident that the effects are unpleasant 1
