  1. 6+1 Traits: Voice If your written product is a delicious ice cream sundae, then the mix-ins (sprinkles, nuts, and candy bits) are “voice” – it is what makes your writing engaging, distinct, and special.

  2. Add “voice” to your writing with R.A.F.T. • R (ole) • A (udience) • F (ormat) • T (opic) Use R.A.F.T. to “unlock” your writing prompt before you begin writing.

  3. Example: Write a letter from Mrs. Bittering to Mr. Bittering... • R (ole): Mrs. Bittering • A (udience): Harry Bittering • F (ormat): Friendly letter • T (opic): convince him to stop freaking out the children

  4. My dear Harry, You are not listening to me much lately, as you are always busy with your rocket. I’m writing because I think you are a little too stressed about returning to Earth. Honey, you just need to lighten up! So what if we eat this food grown on Mars? Don’t you see how hard it will be to get back to Earth? Lately you seem distracted, tired, and frankly, a little crazy! The kids don’t understand why you are behaving this way, and neither do I. I hope you will start to relax and enjoy the sun and friendly people here. The kids would like to go on a hike in the hills outside of town. I hope you’ll join us. Love, your tanned wife P.S. You haven’t complimented me on my tan lately. Stop worrying about that rocket and just enjoy life!

  5. Example: Write a persuasive letter from the perspective of the comfy black chair, to Mrs. Haley’s students. Convince them that they need to sit in the chair more often. • R (ole): The black chair in the corner • A (udience): Mrs. Haley’s students • F (ormat): persuasive letter • T (opic): Why don’t you sit in me more often? Give it a try! In a three minute Quick Write, write the letter.

  6. Add “voice” to your writing with R.A.F.T. Excellent use of the trait of voice means: • The writing comes to life. • It’s engaging, lively, expressive, and has lots of energy. • The writer really seems to care about the topic and the audience, and it shows throughout the writing.
