Rotavirus Launch Rotavirus vaccine launched in Harare Wednesday 6th November Attended by doctors and other health workers from public and private Guest Speaker from Prof. Nathoo Administered in 2 doses 1st 6 weeks of age 2nd 24 weeks Roll out Jan 2014 • The Rotavirus surveillance started in 2007 • National virology Lab –UZ • National Microbiology Reference Laboratory (NMRL) • Three sentinel sites • Harare Hospital • Parirenyatwa Hospital • Chitungwiza Hospital • Of the total of 2887 samples run up to 2011 • 1 495 (51.8%) samples were found positive for rotavirus

Other issues of importance • Meningococcal Meningitis case reported from Harare Central Hospital • Death from Diarrhorea in Kwekwe being investigated • MDA for SCH and STH 28th Oct. to 2nd Nov. • Successful launch • Overwhelming response • Logistic challenges • Constrained budget • Adverse media coverage/hostilities to the program
