  12. Pager Escalation • You have 3 levels of escalation • You have three sets of pagers, • one set for Independent Living, • one set for Assisted Living • and a Charge Nurse-Assisted Living Pager. This is an example of how escalation could be set up

  13. Failure to Acknowledge All devices must be acknowledged. • Failure to acknowledge any device will cause that device to continue to page out 9 times over 45 minutes. After 9 pages the device will stop paging. Failure to reset the Pull Cord as well as the Personal help Buttons will result in a log being written against the Residents record. This is a permanent log that states the alarm was never responded to by staff.

  14. Staff Acknowledge • After a Resident presses their Personal Help Button and sends an Alert to the pagers the following steps should be followed to ‘Staff Acknowledge the Personal Help Button Alert: • Assist the Resident. (follow your facility protocol) • Then press your Staff PHB and then count 1001-1002-1003 and press the Resident’s PHB. This will send a Response signal to the pagers that the original Alert has been responded to.

  16. Staff Acknowledge cont. • All fixed devices (pull cords, help call with acknowledge) also need to be acknowledged. • Again, if an Alert is received from a fixed device go to the resident assist the resident and then if its an alert from a Pull Cord flip the pull cord switch to the up position or if a touch pad (help call with acknowledge) press the top of the touch pad where it says Acknowledge. • This will then send a response signal to the pagers to alert staff that the resident has been taken care of and the fixed device has been responded to and reset.

  17. Critical Alarms Smart Care is not responding! • Inform Management immediately this alarm means your monitoring Software has stopped responding, has been shut down or the main PC has been turned off. • This needs to be addressed immediately.

  18. Backup Paging • You have back up paging installed. Alarms can be sent to the pagers even if the software has stopped responding and or the main PC has been shut down. The alarms will look different on the pagers. Alarms will show the device that sent the alarm i.e. pendant or bath and the Apartment number ONLY.

  19. You will also see as part of the message “PCdown paging from MB” Any alarms received like this should be reported immediately to Management. During this PC down paging from MB all pagers receive all pages –there are no timed devices i.e. Doors on timers will send in an alarm when opened and Pager escalation is not in effect both Life Guidance and Assisted Living pagers receive all pages. The above references are just an example for training purposes

  20. No Supervisory Alarms • All devices are supervised i.e. they must check in with the computer every 64 to 74 minutes. If the proper device check in has not happened within 12 hours-each 12 hours a supervisory alarm is sent to the pager for all devices that have not checked in. • This should be brought to the attention of Maintenance Department immediately and you should delete the Supervisory Pages.

  21. All alarms are logged in the Database of the PC. It will log the time the alarm was received and the time it takes staff to respond to each alarm. • DELETE PAGES AS YOU GO • Do not let pages build up in the memory of your pager. When you receive an alarm and the response for that alarm delete both of the pages.

  22. Battery Replacement and Low Battery Notification • All Fixed devices require a 3.6V lithium battery and must be replaced as part of your regular System maintenance. All devices will send in a Low Battery alert to Smartcare. Maintenance Department has the ability to run report showing all low battery devices and their location. Once replaced, you will need to mark the device as “Battery Has Been Replaced.” Fixed device batteries are good for approximately 2.5 years; however battery life will decrease based on usage. Low Battery Alerts should be managed and replaced as soon as they are posted to your SmartCare software. A low Battery alert does NOT mean the Device is NOT working. It is a Maintenance Alert to notify Maintenance to the fact that it will require replacing.

  23. Personal Help Buttons will also send in a Low Battery Alert. There is a lithium battery in each Personal Help Button. The Personal help Button life is approx 2.5 to 3 years, also based on usage. Personal help Buttons need to be replace when a Low Battery Alert is received. The battery in the Personal Help Buttons IS NOT replaceable. You must replace the entire Personal Help Button.
