  4. Jang Chae Hwan & Kim Jae Hoo • Jang Chae Hwan- transgender; was called the ‘second Ha ri su’ • Kim Jae Hoo- ‘came out’ in a TV program • Both left their wills & last words on cyworld • Again brought up the issue of Restricting Internet comments and rumors

  5. Lee Suh Hyun • Leader of the band M-street • Seems to be related to the “Werther Effect”* • Reason for the death not yet declared • Influenced by other deaths of celebrities

  6. Why should we care? • Every year, the rate for suicides and depressions in Korea is increasing. According to the National Stastical Office, the suicide rate in Korea in the year 2000 was 6437. However, by 2007, the rate almost doubled and became 1,2174. • According to OECD’s suicide rates per 100,000 people, Korea’s suicide rate is 24 people, one of the highest suicide rate in the world. • Depression rate also increased tremendously. In 2003, 395,457 people were categorized as going through depression, but by 2007 this rate increased to 525,446 people. In just five years, the rate increased for about 33%.

Cont. • Suicides have huge influence over others, and celebrity suicides tend to have the largest impact. • The professor from the LeeHwa University said that 10688 people committed suicide last year and that for every 37 hours one teen-ager commits suicide and for every 2 hours one elder over 60 commits suicide. • According to WHO since year 2000 over 1,000,000 people committed suicides.

  9. And so… • Felt the need to create programs that would help people who go through depression and are on the verge of suicides • Stricter punishment for internet slander and rumors • *COOL created a club under the name of ‘Stopping Celebrity Suicides’
