  1. Nail and Foot Care • Do as often as needed • Before nail care is done, soak nails in warm water • Cut nails straight across to prevent ingrown nails • Toenails NOT cut by CNA • Check facility policy on cutting of nails

  2. Finger Nail Care • Knock before entering • Introduce self • Explain procedure, speaking clearly, slowly, and directly, maintaining face to face contact whenever possible • Provide Privacy

  3. Before immersing fingernails, checks water temperature for safety and comfort and asks client to verify comfort of water

  4. Basin is in comfortable position for client • Puts on clean gloves before cleaning fingernails • Soak hand or fingernails in water • Cleans under each fingernail with orangewood stick • Wipes orangewood stick on towel after each nail

  5. Dries fingernail area • Candidate feels each nail and files as needed • Disposes of orangewood stick and emery board into waste container • Empties, rinses, and dries basin • After rinsing basin, places basin in designated dirty supply area

  6. Disposes of used linen into soiled linen container • After cleaning nails and equipment, and disposing of used linen, removes and disposes of gloves (without contaminating self) into waste container and washes hands • Signaling device is within reach of the client

  7. Footcare • Knock before entering • Introduce self • Explain procedure, speaking clearly, slowly, and directly, maintaining face to face contact whenever possible • Provide Privacy

  8. Get a basin of warm water: before washing, check water temperature for safety and comfort. Ask client to verify comfort of water • Basin should be on floor, with protective barrier beneath basin • Put on gloves

  9. Place clients bare foot in water • Apply soap to washcloth • Wash foot including between the toes • Rinse foot, including between the toes • Dries foot, including between the toes • Apply lotion to top and bottom of foot, removing excess with towel • Support ankle and foot during this process • Empty, rinse and place basin in designated dirty area

  10. Place clients bare foot in water • Apply soap to washcloth • Wash foot including between the toes • Rinse foot, including between the toes • Dries foot, including between the toes

  11. Dispose of used linen into basket • Remove gloves (without contaminating self) and place in waste container • Wash hands • Place signal device within reach of client
