A tough task…

  • Introduce essay 2

  • Discuss Videogames

  • Discuss my research

  • Remain informative (and perhaps engaging)

I may not actually manage to do any.

ideogames

This lecture is not about videogames……strictly speaking.

  • Awesome Processing power,

  • Motionscan technology

  • Platform fanboys (and girls)

  • Massively-multiplayer

  • Retina display

  • Touchscreen

  • Interactive

It is all a waste of time.(in my opinion)

Stimulus Response

Ivan Pavlov 1849-1936

Not actually Pavlov’s Dog

So, games are just about jumping through hoops, doing what we’re told. Orchestration and manipulation.(plenty of flaws in this perspective)

I don’t actually think I’m interested in videogames.

I’m interested in lines.

Lines that mark a boundary…

Past

Old

Acceptable

Good

Etc.

Future

New

Reviled

Bad

Etc.

Do these lines actually exist? If they do where are they?

Individual consciousness, public opinion, taste, etiquette, culture, rules, regulations, laws…etc. etc. etc.

Are these lines static?

Past

There is a sense of an ‘Edge’ that is being explored, tested and worked upon.

‘Liminal’‘Liminality’‘Liminoid’

Victor Turner (1920 – 1983)

Can people be linimal? Can behavior be liminoid?

The Liminal person is…

  • “neither here nor there; they are betwixt and between the positions assigned and arrayed by law, custom, convention, and ceremony” (Turner, 1969).

  • “Betwixt and Between”

  • the “realm of pure possibility”

  • structural invisibility.

I am therefore not interested in videogames, but the ‘realm of pure possibility’ they offer.

By what smashes through the line…

Past

Old

Acceptable

Good

Etc.

Future

New

Reviled

Bad

Etc.

A am interested in Transgressive Play.

Why?

And by extension…

And the new cultural practices that are becoming common…

Mashup, Remix, etc.

And the transgressive processes that support them… P2P, filesharing, security circumvantion etc.

What happens when enough people start doing something transgressive?

Hobbes’ Social Contract(1588-1679) See Leviathan

  • The State of Nature is "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short”…

  • So we the people give consent to be governed – "the mutual transferring of right”.

  • Law, under this model should reflect the views of the people.

Who loses out?

Future

Is this a stable process? Is it a battle?

Are there casualties?

SOPAandPIPA(or old world v future)

Hitler or Shirky?

  • SHIRKYhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=9h2dF-IsH0I

  • HITLERhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=uvXo4sGB7zM

SOPA

  • Stop Online Piracy Act: October 26th 2011 – US Bill 3261

  • Raised by a consortium of production companies - $94 million (estimated)

What it does

  • Removes offending websites from DNS

  • i.e. www.google.com > 216.239.51.99

  • Effectively the websites disappear from the internet (although they actually don’t apart from average users)…

  • …those actually involved in piracy would use the IPs.

Who Proposed it?

  • Supporters:Universal, Warner, Viacom, Time Warner, Sony Music, News Corp, Random House, Penguin, Pearson, Disney, EMI, ESPN, BMI, BMG Chrysalis, ABC

  • Defectors:Electronic Arts, Nintendo, Sony Computer Entertainment

  • Opponents:AOL, eBay, Facebook, Google, Mozilla, Wikipedia

SOPA was temporarily shelved…

  • Tuesday 17th Jan 2012

But it will be back.

Back to the beginning…

Your essay explores the bridge between either side of the line:

Past

Old

Acceptable

Good

Etc.

Future

New

Reviled

Bad

Etc.

My research explores the tensions between the line:

Past

Old

Acceptable

Good

Etc.

Future

New

Reviled

Bad

Etc.

The debates around SOPA are fundamentally important within this scope:

Past

Old

Acceptable

Good

Etc.

Future

New

Reviled

Bad

Etc.
