The Pace of Music • Tempo – Italian word for “speed.” • Allegro – fast • Andante -- walking • Moderato – medium • Adagio – slow • (See page 35) • More terms • Ritardando – Slowing gradually • Accelerando – Speeding up gradually • Dynamics – The louds and softs in music • Forte (For-tay) – Loud • Fortissimo – Very loud • Piano – Soft • Pianissimo -- Very soft • Mezzo – literally “half” mp – mezzo piano mf – mezzo forte (See page 36)

Musical Timbre (Tam-ber) • Tone color or timbre – the unique sound that is associated with any given solo or combination of instruments. • Instrument – a mechanism that generates musical vibrations and launches them into the air. • Register – The range of an instrument, such as high or low. • The Voice – • Soprano – Sopra literally “over.” The high female voice. • Mezzo-soprano • Alto – A lower female voice. • Tenor – A high male voice • Pavarotti, a legend (see bio on page 40). • Baritone – “normal” • Bass – A low male voice • Vibrato -- throbbing effect
