First Commandment with Promise

Eph 6:2-3 –“Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)

That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.”

  • Ex. 20:12 - 5th Commandment – First and only with promise – only one positive.

  • Ex. 20:3-17 - “Thou shalt not” or “Thou shalt have no” occurs 11 times = failure (Gal. 3:21).

  • Ex. 20:12 basis for Deut. 5:16.

Prolonging of Days

“long” in Ex. 20:12 and “prolonged” in Deut. 5:16 are the same Hebrew word arak.

arak occurs 5 times in Deut. 4-8.

Principle - 1 Tim. 4:8 – “…godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.”

Key learning – Honouring Yahweh by manifesting His integrity and keeping His judgements is the way to eternal life – Rom. 2:7.

Deut. 4:1 - “statutes” – choq – used 14 times Chaps. 4-8 – 21 book.

“judgements” - mishpat occurs 37 times in book – 12 between Deut. 4 and 8.

“possess” – yarash – used 14 times in section – 71 times book.

“give/eth” – nathan – used 21 times in section and 176 in book.

Over-arching Principle – Prolonging days and possessing the Land is a gift of God, and depends on keeping His statutes and ways.

Heb. meod – with vehemence; exceedingly, much.

Deut. 4:9 – “diligently”.

Deut. 4:15 – “good heed (shamar)”.

Deut. 6:3 – “mightily”.

Deut. 6:7 – “diligently” - shanan - (Piel) to sharpen, teach (incisively).

Ps. 119:167– “My soul hath kept thy testimonies; and I love them exceedingly.”

The Temptation of Christ

Why were the Lord’s responses to temptation all drawn from Deut. 6-8?

Tempted in all points like us – Heb. 4:15.

Deut. 6:5 – First and greatest commandment – Matt. 22:38.

His mission – To ‘prolong his days’, and do likewise for all who love God.

Rom 6:23 – “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

“sons”, “children” – ben – used 127 times in Deuteronomy - 24 occs. in chapters 4-8.

Note - 4:9,10,25,40; 5:9,29; 6:2,7,20,21; 8:5.

Matt. 4:3-4 –“And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.

But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”

V. 2 - “prove” – nasah - to test, try, prove, tempt, assay, put to the proof or test. First occ. of 36 is Gen. 22:1.

“know” – yada – used Gen. 18:19.

V. 5 – “chasteneth” (2) – yasar - to chasten, discipline, instruct, admonish. Trans. “instruct” Deut. 4:36.

V. 15-16 – Survival in ‘the wilderness of life’ is a work of God, with an aim – “that he might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end.”

Theme - "children" and chasteningv.5-11

V.8- "bastards" - nothos - spurious or illegitimate son - Esau is the example selected.

Esau - no chastening - fornicator and "profane" - Gr. bebelos - permitted to be trodden, accessible (a threshold); unhallowed, profane - despised his birthright - the failed firstborn - v.16-17.

V.23 - The general assembly and ecclesia of the firstborns (plural) – relates to "chastening" and "the spirits of just men made perfect".

What Kind of Chastening?

Ps. 119:67– “Before I was afflicted, I myself was going astray, but, now, thy word, have I kept.” (Roth.)

Ps. 94:10-13 – “He that chastiseth the nations, shall not he correct? he that teacheth man knowledge, shall not he know?

Yahweh knoweth the thoughts of man, that they are vanity.

Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest, O Yahweh, and teachest him out of thy law;

That thou mayest give him rest from the days of adversity.”

Esau’s Days Not Prolonged!

Obad. 1:10-12 – “For thy violence against thy brother Jacob shame shall cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off for ever.

In the day that thou stoodest on the other side, in the day that the strangers carried away captive his forces, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou wast as one of them.

But thou shouldest not have looked on the day of thy brother in the day that he became a stranger; neither shouldest thou have rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither shouldest thou have spoken proudly in the day of distress.”

Esau’s Days Not Prolonged!

Obad. 1:13-14 - “Thou shouldest not have entered into the gate of my people in the day of their calamity; yea, thou shouldest not have looked on their affliction in the day of their calamity, nor have laid hands on their substance in the day of their calamity;

Neither shouldest thou have stood in the crossway, to cut off those of his that did escape; neither shouldest thou have delivered up those of his that did remain in the day of distress.”

Obadiah 1:18 – “…and there shall not be any remaining of the house of Esau.”
