Device Design Overview

Our device starts with a ball inside a cup being balanced about an axis. A force will be applied to the cup causing the cup to tip over. The ball will fall out of the cup onto a ramp. As the ball finishes down the ramp, it will fall into another cup that will initiate a pulley system. The pulley system, which is attached to the desk lamp, will turn the switch, thus turning on the light.

  • Our first engineering concept of our device is center of mass. The ball will rest inside a cup while being balanced on an axis. Initially, we have the gravitational potential energy of the ball, and once the cup tips over, potential energy will transform into translational and rotational kinetic energy.

  • The ball started initially from rest. As it rolls down the ramp energy is conserved as the gravitational potential is transformed into translational and rotational kinetic energy.

  • As the ball finishes down the ramp it will fall into a cup creating a inelastic collision between the ball and the cup.

  • After the collision between the ball and the cup, the cup and the ball begin to fall together with an initial velocity equal to the final velocity of the collision.

    s2 = (1/2)at^2+v0t+s0

  • The force due to the accelerating cup will produce a tension on the rope. This tension is redirected through the pulley system which is connected to the rotating switch on the light. This will provide a torque on the switch, turning on the light.
