  1. Fire Safety

  2. Aims & Objectives To ensure that designated colleagues are aware of their role when the alarm sounds. The session will include: • the action that needs to be taken by colleagues • practical experience in the safe use of fire extinguishers.

  3. Action to be taken in the event of a fire - currently • Person discovering the fire raises the alarm • Call the fire service • Evacuate the building

  4. Fire Service Attendances • All attendances so far in 2011 have been as a result of automatic detectors triggering the fire alarm • There have been no fires to fight! • There is a need to ensure that as far as possible, the fire service is only called out when needed.

  5. Fire Marshalls Action to be taken in the event of the fire alarm sounding • Instruct colleagues, visitors, contractors to leave immediately via the nearest designated fire exit • Swiftly and systematically check all rooms and areas in your area/zone for persons and, for any signs of fire closing doors behind you.

  6. Looking for Signs of fire • See, hear, smell, feel • Before opening any doors, feel the door handle & feel the door with the back of your hand for signs of heat – where on the door? • If it is hot, DO NOT open the door • Report to Muster controller/Duty Manager with details of any signs of fire and whether your area is clear. Remember that you are looking for signs of fire, not a fire itself.

  7. Backdraft • The explosive or rapid burning of heated gases that occurs when oxygen is introduced into a room that has not been properly ventilated and has a depleted supply of oxygen due to fire.

  8. Muster Controller ‘999’ • On confirmation from Fire Marshalls or others in the building that there are signs of fire, the Muster Controller/Duty Manager will arrange for the Fire Service to be called • Calls from the call centre/shunt system.

  9. Site Specific Fire Procedures • Each site should have its own fire procedures • Complex sites may need support from H&S • A record should be kept of the fire alarm activation

  10. Human Reactions • What happens when the fire alarm sounds? • Fire Marshalls – take control! • ‘Sheep syndrome’ • What do you do if someone refuses to leave?

  11. Fire Drills Why do we have them? • Ensure procedures work • Check that colleagues know the action to be taken • Confirm colleagues know the alternative routes • Legal requirement. How can we make drills more realistic?

  12. Fire Safety at Home • Where are you most at risk from fire – at home or at work? • Do you know that you are twice as likely to die in a fire if you haven’t got a smoke alarm?

  13. Fire Escape Plan • Plan together • Choose an escape route • Choose a second escape route • Think about a refuge • Ensure keys are accessible • Practice

  14. Oxygen Fuel Heat Fire Triangle

  15. Practical – any questions?
