Introducing the Author • NAME: George Orwell • OCCUPATION: Journalist, Author • BIRTH DATE: June 25, 1903 • DEATH DATE: January 21, 1950 • EDUCATION: Eton • PLACE OF BIRTH:Motihari, India • PLACE OF DEATH: London, United Kingdom • BEST KNOWN FOR • George Orwell was an English novelist, essayist, and critic most famous for his novels Animal Farm (1945) and Nineteen Eighty-four (1949).

Introducing the Author • Born Eric Arthur Blair, George Orwell created some of the sharpest satirical fiction of the 20th century. • Animal Farm • 1984 • He was a man of strong opinions who addressed some of the major political movements of his times, including imperialism, fascism and communism.

Genre • Dystopia: A perfect society gone wrong. • Orwell warns against what could happen in the future based on the atrocities and dictators that gained power in WWII. • The rise of totalitarian governments. • The use of science and technology to regulate or brainwash society. • The distortion of truth through rhetoric. • The restricting of individual freedoms.

  10. Main Characters • Winston Smith - The “everyman” who is a member of the Party, rewrites history, and begins to rebel against the party. • O’Brien - A man with whom Winston feels a connection. Member of “the brotherhood,” an underground rebel group. • Julia - A girl from Winston’s work that he becomes interested in.
