  1. NCSL Project OverviewLeadership for Healthy Communities Grantee Meeting, Washington, D.C.February 24-25, 2010

NCSL Target Groups • State Legislators • Legislative Staff • Legislators are the policy advocates and champions to help build healthy communities for their constituents. • NCSL assists legislators and staff with timely, relevant information to assist them in making policy decisions and achieving their policy goals.

  3. NCSL Geographic Area • 15 southern states prioritized by RWJF and LHC • Within that region, 8 states targeted for intensive NCSL policy assistance: • Southeast - Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina • Southwest - Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas • All 50 state legislatures are NCSL members--staff will continue to provide assistance upon request and report policy developments to the degree resources allow.

NCSL HEAL Policies & Strategies • Healthy Eating • Quality Nutrition in Schools • Nutrition standards, nutrition education, farm-to-school programs • Supermarkets and Healthy Food Vendors • Grocery development incentives, farmers' markets • Farm Fresh Local Foods • Community gardens, procurement policies

NCSL HEAL Policies & Strategies • Active Living • Active Transportation • Walking/biking infrastructure, complete streets • Land Use for Active Living • Mixed use and transit-oriented development • Quality Physical Activity in and Near Schools • Physical education and physical activity in schools, comprehensive school wellness policies

  6. NCSL Theory of Change • Provide legislators with information about the range of policy options to address childhood obesity. • Report on current research and translate into policy applications. • Help legislators understand how different policy approaches can meet their policy objectives. • Provide technical assistance to legislators and their staff to support policy actions they choose to take.
