  3. CLOZE AND MATH • In mathematics we could extend the cloze procedure to equations • Instead of deleting words in a sentence _______________ was the first Prime Minister in Canada. we could remove terms in a solution x2 + _____ x + 12 =(x + 2)(x + ____)

  4. Benefits to CLOZE • It can be use to test ability based on a specific skill • For example I wanted to see if they understood: • exponent laws when distributing x4(y + x2) = x-----y + x----- • Collecting like terms -2d + 7ad – 3ad + 2d = ____ ad + ____d

Benefits to CLOZE • It can be an open question • It can allow multiple entry points based on the level of the student x2 + _____ x + 12 = (x + 2)(x + ____) Students get to pick their own number that is at a level they are comfortable with and work through expanding and collecting like terms to come up with the other blank on the left side of the equal sign

Benefits to CLOZE • It can be used as a diagnostic, formative, or summative assessment • It can lead to sharing of answers and coaching peers • Students can explain how they came up with their own answer using their numbers in a think pair share • Students can collaboratively brainstorm a start point if stuck • Students can work together on a single problem

  7. CHALLENGES TO CLOZE • Does not work for all math concepts • Students who have lower logical and visual/spatial intelligences may struggle with a starting point

Trying cloze • I have pre-sorted our department into 4 groups based on what we are currently teaching or have taught/will be teaching • We are a small department so not all courses are included but at least one you have been involved in is included MFM1P/MPM1D – Darren and Lisa MFM2P/MPM1D – Rose and Jim MBF3C/MCF3M/MCR3U – Amy and Lorraine MCV4U – Diane and Tom

  9. Trying cloze • Find your group • Have 1 member pick up white board and markers • Have 1 member pick up curriculum documents

  10. Trying cloze Group Task: • Together pick a(n) expectation(s) common to the courses in your group • Together create at least 3 examples of CLOZE questions you could use teaching these courses • Add your created questions to the summary chart paper at the front under the appropriate heading
