  1. CLASS(Comprehensive Large Array-data Stewardship System) August L. Shumbera NOAA/NESDIS National Climatic Data center

  2. NOAA's National Data Centers and their world-wide clientele of customers look to CLASS as the sole NOAA IT infrastructure project in which all current and future large array environmental data sets will reside. CLASS provides permanent, secure storage and safe, efficient access between the Data Centers and the customers. Project OverviewGoals and Vision • CLASS is: • A combined processto both reengineer legacy data storage and access systems and blend new and efficient technologies to ensure the stewardship of existing (e.g., POES, GOES, NEXRAD, in-situ) and rapidly approaching large-array data sets (e.g., NPP/NPOESS, EOS, METOP, NEXRAD). • An aggressive planto safeguard, enhance, expand and automate NOAA’s capability to ingest, store, quality control, preserve, and access its vast environmental data holdings. • A focused effortto ensure the Information Technology (IT) infrastructure is in place and working, before the arrival of significantly larger and more complex environmental data (e.g., NPP/NPOESS, and GOES-R). • An assuranceof environmental data availability to the Nation through the development of a virtual mirror-site.

  3. Basis for Investment – Challenges Archive Data Volumes CLASS will provide: • An easy-to-use access Portal for the Nation to obtain environmental data • Integration of data for the user (Search, Browse, Geospatial capabilities) • Higher quality and volume of environmental data which contributes to improvements in prediction capabilities • Decreased cost of redundant resources (e.g., hardware, software, media and associated costs of operations and maintenance) On-Line Customer Requests

  4. CLASS Current Configuration • CLASS is an operational component of NOAA's Office of Systems Development (OSD) and NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC). • OSD and NCDC are organizations of NOAA's National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS). • CLASS is NOAA's premiere on-line facility for the distribution of: • NOAA Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite (POES) and US Department of Defense (DoD) Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) data and derived data products. • NOAA's Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) data and derived products. • Will be expanded to include other major campaigns (e.g. NPP/NPOESS, EOS, METOP, NEXRAD, etc.)

  5. CLASS Configuration (Continued) • CURRENT • Dual sites • Mixed hardware & software • Different archive systems • FUTURE (in about 18 months) • Two sites (Asheville & Suitland) • Identical hardware & software • Data fully replicated • Third site • Identical hardware & software • Data ingested and held – to be determined
