  2. Early Mesopotamia • Sumerians first to build a civilization • 5 characteristics of civilization • Advanced cities, specialized workers, complex institutions, record keeping, improved technology CUNEIFORM WRITING

  3. ZIGGURAT • Found in early Mesopotamian societies • Temple at center of city. • Used for worship, sacrifice to local gods AND community grain storage.

  4. Egypt and the Nile River

  5. The Nile River in Egypt • Flows from the South to the North into the Mediterranean Sea. • Annual floods bring silt (rich soil) to area for farming • Used for transportation of people and resources

  6. The Egyptian Pyramids • Found in Egypt • Built by Egyptian slaves AND paid workers • Used only for burial of pharaohs. • The tomb was seen as a way to the afterlife and it housed the mummy and belongings of dead pharaoh.

Greece and Rome GREECE ROME Roman Empire centered in modern day Italy Includes emperors like Caesar, Augustus, Constantine I and Nero Early Christianity spreads to Rome and popularizes Gladiators • Formed of many city-states • Cultures focused on war, art, literature, beautiful architecture and new democracy • Included cultures like Sparta and Athens

  8. Founder Stories • Judaism • Abraham chosen by God • Moved to Canaan then Egypt • Moses led Hebrew slaves out of Egypt (Exodus) • Moses gets 10 Commandments from Mt. Sinai • Hebrews return to Canaan • Kingdom of Israel led by King Saul, King David and King Solomon • Build King Solomon’s Temple

  9. Founder Stories • Christianity • Jesus born of Mary and Joseph • Teaches apostles • Crucified on the cross and resurrected on the third day (Easter) • Apostle Paul spread Jesus’ teachings after Jesus’ death • Apostle Peter traveled to Rome, became first bishop…beginning of Catholic Church

Founder Stories • Islam • Prophet Muhammad has vision of angel during meditation • Began teaching Allah was one and only god • Muslim means to “submit to the will of Allah” • Muhammad leaves Mecca to Medina after attacked • In Medina becomes religious and political leader • Returns to Mecca and takes over city

  11. Middle Ages • Feudal system • Manors-self contained neighborhood for people • Harsh living conditions for the peasants • Everyone had to pay taxes to the church and king • Crusades-Christians vs. Muslims • Bubonic Plague-spread by fleas on rats and started in trading port cities

  12. Renaissance • Means ‘rebirth’ of classical Greek and Roman art, literature, ideas and architecture • Starts in Italy • Medici family-patron of the arts • Renaissance Man- Ex. Leonardo Da Vinci • Invention of printing press

  13. Reformation • Martin Luther-95 Thesis • Didn’t like the selling of indulgences • Christians broke away from the Catholic Church to form Protestant branch
