History • Founded by William Penn • The first European settlers on the site were Swedes, who established a community at the mouth of the Schuylkill not later than 1643. • The city developed a thriving trade with the West Indies and soon became the largest and most important city in the colonies. • The First and Second Continental congresses were held in Philadelphia. • The city served as the nation's unofficial capital throughout the War of Independence, except for the period between September 26, 1777, and June 18, 1778, when it was held by the British.

The bell weighs more than 2,000 pounds. It is said it cracked the first time it was rung in the year 1776. It seems a flaw in creation caused the problem. • Philadelphia is credited with giving birth to such culinary sensations as the cheesesteak sandwich, soft pretzels and TastyKakes. • The Philadelphia Museum of Art was made famous by being featured in the popular “Rocky” films, when Sylvester Stallone, as the boxer Rocky, made his famous training runs up the front steps. • The first daily newspaper was published in Philadelphia in 1784. • The first U.S. stock exchange was in Philadelphia.
