  1. Listen Up Improve Your Listening Skills

  2. Listening Facts • You spend nearly one-half of your day listening • Most people listen poorly • You can be trained to listen effectively • Listening well takes practice • The highest level of listening involves empathy - looking at and listening to the world through the eyes and ears of the speaker

  3. Listening – 4 Step Process • Sense/hear sound • Interpret it/decide what it means • Evaluate it/do you agree with it? • Respond to it

  4. Listening Barriers • Sensing Sounds • Other competing sounds • Difficulty hearing • Interpreting • Halfhearted attention • Being distracted by another conversation or activity

  5. Barriers Continued • Evaluating • Not trying to understand the other person • Thinking of your next response instead of what is being said • Jumping to conclusions • Responding • Being too quick to respond or too fearful to respond

  6. Listening in Class • Concentrate on the lecture’s main points • Do not try to capture everything you hear • Do not criticize the instructor’s delivery

  7. Prepare to Listen • Have a positive attitude • Keep an open mind about the speaker and topic • Prepare by reading or thinking about what you might hear • Have a goal • Get facts, learn a process, understand an idea

  8. Avoid Bad Listening Habits • Don’t fake it – while you are actually daydreaming • Don’t listen to only parts of the message • Avoid thinking about what you are going to say next – keep message focused on the speaker

  9. Listening to Friends • Stop talking • You cannot listen while you are talking • Listen to learn rather than to oppose • Avoid becoming angry
