  1. Gravity, Mass, and Weight Notes

  2. Gravity Gravity- a force that pulls objects toward each other without direct contact or impact.

  3. Facts on Gravity • There is a gravitational pull between the Sun and the planets and between the Earth and the moon. • A larger object has more gravity and a stronger pull on other objects. (Ex: Sun) • When objects are close in distance= a greater pull. • Planets closest to the Sun orbit faster. Those far away orbit much slower because of less gravitational pull from the Sun.

  4. Mass Mass- the amount of matter or “stuff” in an object.

  5. Facts on Mass • Mass is always the same. • An object with mass is affected by gravity. • Mass can be found using a balance.

  6. Weight Weight- the measure of the pull of gravity on an object.

  7. Facts on Weight • Weight can change at different areas on Earth because of a difference in gravitational pull. • Weight would change on different planets and moons because of the difference in the gravitational pulls. • Weight may change, Mass will stay same. • Weight-measured with a spring scale.
